How to Update NFT Metadata on Solana
NFT metadata is the name, image, description, and attributes people see. On Solana that JSON usually sits at a URI, and an on-chain field points at it. Who may change that pointer depends on the NFT standard. One editor cannot update every standard.
On-chain pointer vs the JSON file
The account stores a URI. The JSON at that URI stores the image URL and attributes. Updating metadata means writing a new URI, or changing JSON at a URL you still control. If you do not control the host, changing the account URI is the path that works.
Update authority and immutability
Token Metadata uses an update authority on the metadata account. Core uses the asset’s update authority. If that authority is none, or the asset is marked immutable, the edit is rejected. Mutable metadata can still be changed by the authority. Revoking update authority is not the same action as revoking a token’s mint authority.
By standard
- Token Metadata and pNFT: the metadata account’s update authority signs. This site does not ship a Token Metadata update form.
- Metaplex Core: open Update Metaplex Core NFT metadata. Collection-level fields use Update Core collection.
- Compressed NFTs: Bubblegum leaf updates are a different instruction. The Core editor will not load them as editable Core assets.
What usually fails
The connected wallet is not the update authority. The asset is immutable. The URI upload failed before the transaction. Or the address is a collection when the form expects an asset. Look the address up in the metadata viewer first.

Metadata update FAQ
- Which update tool should I open?
- If the asset is Metaplex Core, use Update Core NFT. That form does not edit Token Metadata, pNFTs, or compressed NFTs. Check the asset in the metadata viewer if you are unsure.
- Can I change metadata after it is immutable?
- No. Immutable metadata and a revoked update authority both block edits. The transaction will fail even if the form still lets you type.
- Does changing the URI change the image everywhere immediately?
- Wallets and marketplaces cache JSON and images. The chain updates when the transaction confirms. Displays can lag until they refetch the URI.
