SPL Token vs Token-2022

Solana has more than one token program. The classic SPL Token program and Token-2022 (also called Token Extensions) both create fungible mints, but they are not the same account layout and they do not share every tool path.

Classic SPL Token

Classic SPL is what most "create my coin" flows still mean. On Solana Toolset, Create Classic Token mints with Metaplex Token Metadata for name, symbol, and image. Explorers, DEXes, and wallets have deep support for this path.

Token-2022

Token-2022 is a separate program that can enable extensions on the mint or token accounts. Transfer fees, permanent delegates, and other extension types change how transfers behave. Solana Toolset exposes Create Token-2022 and Update Token-2022 for the create and metadata update flows this site supports — not every extension that exists in the ecosystem.

How to choose

Simple community or meme token with standard metadata → classic SPL.
You need a Token-2022 extension the form supports → Token-2022.
You need a custom program or unusual extension → build outside this UI; do not pretend the browser form covers it.

Authorities and safety

Mint and freeze authority concepts exist on both families. Revoke with Revoke Authorities when ready. Check a mint with Rug Check before you trust a stranger's token.
